Fish Starting to Rise !
Well I have had a very busy couple of weeks and the fishing in the Taupo region has been very good. We have had good periods of rain and every time there is a spike in the river level there are still fresh fish entering the rivers to make there spawning runs, that combined with alot of spent fish returning from the upper reaches means there are plenty of fish to be caught. With a real mixture of fresh and spent fish being caught remember to make sure you handle and release these spent fish carefully so they can return to the lake and regain condition for next years spawning runs.
The weather is really starting to warm up now and there have been good mayfly hatches on most of the rivers, when the hatches start the fish dont hesitate to take advantage of this plentifull food source. A good fly to use during the day is the parachute adams or the klinkhammer. Both of these flies are great mayfly imitations and have caught many fish for me over the years. If you are finding that the fish are a bit hesitant to take the dry fly try tying a small flash back nymph about 3 feet under the dry this will usually do the trick.
Another great way to fish for these rising fish is to use wee wets. I usually fish them in a team of two on a true dropper then cast them slightly up stream and then let them swing down stream. The strike usually comes when they start to swing.
So tight lines everyone and enjoy the weekend
Cheers Marcel
