Fishing Reports

Fish Starting to Rise !

Well I have had a very busy couple of weeks and the fishing in the Taupo region has been very good.  We have had good periods of rain and every time there is a spike in the river level there are still fresh fish entering the rivers to make there spawning runs, that combined with alot of spent fish returning from the upper reaches means there are plenty of fish to be caught.  With a real mixture of fresh and spent fish being caught remember to make sure you handle and release these spent fish carefully so they can return to the lake and regain condition for next years spawning runs.

Tongariro River Fishing Fishing Well

The Tongariro river is fishing really well with the flood we had 4 days ago the river has dropped down to about 35 cumecs and has a lovely green tinge to it , there has some very good runs come up the river with reports coming into the shop of very well conditioned rainbow trout getting caught right through the system .

This morning i went up to the blue pool for a quick fish and landed three nice rainbows in an hour all silver and in the 3.5 lb mark I caught all of them on my green stone fly nymph , this nymph is always my first choice on a receding river

Fishing Taupo

The 1st of October has passed and fishing the Taupo region becomes a whole lot more interesting with all of the back country rivers open and of course lake Otamangakau opening as well.  There is just so much choice out there now and within an hours drive from either Taupo or Turangi there are some spectacular rivers and streams to fish.

Great runs in the Tongariro River

It has been a couple of very busy weeks with the guiding and I am pleased to say that the fishing has finally taken a turn for the better.  With the rain we had last week there were some very good runs come through the Tongariro River with regular reports coming through the shop of fresh run fat silver rainbow trout being caught and amongst these runs are some much larger fish with an average of about 3.5 lb.

A busy weekend on the Tongariro River

So we have had a very busy weekand on the Tongariro River and even though the river was very low and clear there were very good reports of fresh run rainbow trout getting caught right through the river.  The most sucsessful anglers were using wet lines with #10 olive wooly buggers and #10 olive rabbits doing the dammage.  The nymph fisherman were struggling a bit more but those who used smaller natural patterns like the flash back hares ear #16 and black flash backs in #16 were catching plenty of fish.

Some good runs in the Tongariro River

Well I have been on holiday for a week.  Frances and I went to Waiheke Island for the week and had a great time.  It was nice to do some salt water fishing for a change and nothing quite beats a taste of fresh snapper!!

Mixed Results on the Tongariro River

It has certainly been busy on the Tongariro river over the last few weeks with lots of anglers trying their luck for the fresh run rainbow trout.  Reports coming into the shop have been very mixed with some people having great success and others not even getting a touch.  Most of the good reports are from fisherman who are getting up early and being on the water first thing and the fishing seems to get very hard as the sun comes out.  There have been some very well conditioned fish getting caught although the size is a bit smaller than what we would expect for this time of year.

Fly Fishing on Mohaka River

I have been guiding a lot on the Mohaka River over the last couple of weeks and the fishing has been very good with lots of very well conditioned wild rainbow trout being landed.  The fish in this river are something else they run like freight trains, often taking you down to the backing.  Most fish were caught on small brown stone fly nymphs #16 although in the afternoons when things warmed up the fish really

Fishing Report 23/02/2011

Sorry I didn't get to doing a report last week, things got very busy with the guiding.  Well things are surely starting to improve again on the Tongariro River with some nice fresh rainbow trout landed over the week.  Most were landed on cicadas with a black beaded nymph underneath.  There are still allot of big brown trout in the river and I have been hearing all week that they are very hard to hook.  This is usually the case with these fish during the day although in the evening they seem to feed allot more actively and the best way to target these fish is to use a sink tip line and dark olive or black wooly buggers swung right infront of there nose.

Fishing Report 10/02/2011

After a busy week of guiding I am pleased to say that the fishing on the Tongariro river seems to be improving, after that big flood 2 weeks ago and the warmer weather has brought out the cicadas.  Most of the fish my clients caught this week were caught on the turk tarantula which is a great cicada pattern, a large dry fly that floats well and is easy to see on the water, also great for hanging bead head nymphs under as it wont sink so easily.
