About Riverway Fishing Guides

My name is Marcel Ryda. I am the co-owner and head guide at Riverway Fishing Guides.  I have been a fishing guide in the Taupo and Central Plateau region for 12 years and have been fishing this area for over 20 years.

This region boasts some of the finest fly fishing in New Zealand, from fishing the mighty Tongariro River for winter run wild rainbow and brown trout to secluded wilderness streams where large trout can be sighted and fished for with dry flies and tiny nymphs.

It has been my pleasure over the years to share the spectacular scenery and fantastic fishing with clients from all over the world with many returning year after year to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Taupo area and the wonderful sport of fly fishing.

In 2008 my parents, Jack and Vera Ryda, and I expanded the business by opening Riverway General Store and Outfitters.  The old land mark building which used to be Taylors Lodge is situated right next to the world famous Tongariro river, an ideal location for our guiding operation and shop.  We stock a selection of great fishing tackle and a huge range of local flies, many of which are my own patterns which I have developed over the years.

We hire out quality waders and fly rods as well as mountain bikes.  We also stock convenience items such as bread, milk, cold drinks, newspapers and snacks. You can sit in our coffee corner and enjoy a great expresso coffee whilst telling tall fishing tales.

So next time you are in town drop in for a chat, enjoy a great coffee and get some expert friendly advise on fly fishing in the Taupo area.

In terms of learning the tactics specific to the rivers around Taupo and how the fish react to fly presentation it was money well spent. We would not have caught fish without their input.

Whilst expensive due to the exchange rate form the UK, I cannot recommend highly enough the guiding service from Marcel and Riverway fishing.

Even my wife caught one (she fell in as a result of the shock and laughed all the way home)
